As a theme park enthusiast and parent, I recently revisited Drayton Manor Resort, a regional theme park in the UK, to see if it still holds up as a fun and affordable family destination. My personal experience at this park, which I last visited almost 20 years ago, was a pleasant surprise, and I believe it deserves more attention as an underrated gem in the British theme park scene.
The Nostalgia Factor
Drayton Manor holds a special place in my childhood memories, and returning as an adult with my own kids was a nostalgic journey. I was delighted to find that some of my favorite rides from my youth, like the Buffalo Coaster (now rebranded as a Viking-themed ride), were still there, offering a sense of continuity and a chance to relive those thrilling moments.
Ride Accessibility and Age-Appropriate Attractions
One aspect that stood out to me was the range of rides suitable for different age groups. My two-year-old, who is under 90cm tall, had limited options, but the Sodor Classic Cars in Thomas World provided a fun and comfortable experience. Meanwhile, my four-year-old, who recently surpassed the one-meter mark, was able to enjoy a variety of rides, including three rollercoasters. However, I found the age restrictions on certain rides to be a bit confusing, with my youngest not allowed on a mini logflume ride, while my eldest could ride a more intense coaster.
Lack of Crowds and Short Queues
What impressed me the most about Drayton Manor was the absence of long queues. During my visit on a weekend in June, wait times for popular rides rarely exceeded 25 minutes, a stark contrast to the hour-long queues I've experienced at larger parks like Alton Towers and Legoland Windsor. This made for a much more enjoyable and stress-free experience, especially with young children in tow.
The Onsite Hotel: A Convenient Option
We opted to stay at the Drayton Manor Resort hotel, which was not there during my last visit. While a theme park hotel is generally basic, I found the Thomas Rooms to be clean, spacious, and well-themed, pleasing my children immensely. The service was efficient and friendly, and the hotel offered a convenient base for our weekend stay.
Affordability and Convenience
Drayton Manor offers significant savings compared to the UK's most popular theme parks. Day tickets are reasonably priced, and the park also features a small zoo and an adventure playground. However, I found the food options to be expensive, as is often the case at theme parks. Bringing your own food is allowed, and with a bit of planning, a visit to Drayton Manor can be very affordable, especially if you take advantage of Tesco Clubcard points for ticket purchases.
Final Thoughts
Drayton Manor Resort may be smaller than some of its competitors, but its lack of crowds, short queues, and friendly staff make it a great choice for a family day out. The park offers a good variety of rollercoasters for its size, and we left feeling like we hadn't exhausted all the attractions. If you're a theme park fan, I'd highly recommend giving Drayton Manor a try. It's a fun, nostalgic, and affordable option that deserves a spot on your summer holiday itinerary.
