The majority of US voters are increasingly linking extreme weather events to the climate crisis, according to a recent study. This finding comes as no surprise, given the alarming frequency and intensity of weather events in recent years. Despite Donald Trump's attempts to dismiss global heating as a 'con job' and a 'hoax', the public is clearly aware of the dire consequences of climate change. The study, conducted by Data for Progress, reveals that 61% of likely American voters believe extreme weather events have become more frequent over the past five years. This includes a significant majority of Democrats (72%), a substantial number of Independents (63%), and even nearly half of all Republicans (46%). The survey also delves into the specific forms of extreme weather that voters believe are being worsened by climate change. Majorities linked climate change to worsening wildfires (64%), droughts (63%), flooding and flash flooding (62%), hurricanes (59%), and severe thunderstorms and hailstorms (59%). However, heatwaves topped the list, with 67% of respondents saying climate change is making them worse, including 48% of Republicans. This finding is particularly striking, as high temperatures kill more people annually in the US than hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods combined. The study suggests that scorching conditions could provide an 'interesting opening salvo' to initiate conversations about the climate crisis. It highlights the need to address the broader implications of extreme weather events and their impact on vulnerable populations, such as outdoor workers. The polling also indicates that most Americans think lawmakers should address the risks faced by workers in extreme heat. About 88% of participants in the Data for Progress survey supported policies requiring employers to provide heat protections, such as access to drinking water, shade, breaks, and air conditioning. Only 7% opposed the policy, indicating broad support for these measures. This finding is significant, as it challenges the notion that climate action is a partisan issue. The public's concern for worker safety and their willingness to support climate justice-focused measures demonstrate a growing awareness of the human cost of climate change. However, the study also reveals a concerning misconception: many Americans still believe the warming is due to natural cycles, rather than human activity. This misunderstanding highlights the need for effective climate communication strategies to educate the public about the true causes of climate change. In conclusion, the study underscores the public's growing awareness of the climate crisis and their demand for action. It serves as a reminder that climate action is not just an environmental issue but a matter of public health, worker safety, and social justice. As the country grapples with the impacts of extreme weather events, it is crucial to address the underlying causes and implement policies that protect both the environment and its people.
